Stoodley Pike
Stoodley Pike features briefly in "Limestone Cowboy". The obelisk was originally built in 1814-15 to commemorate the defeat of Napoleon's armies at Leipzig and Waterloo. It fell down in 1856 but was promptly rebuilt, presumably using better cement.
The base section is hollow, and a spiral staircase leads to a viewing platform about a quarter of the way up. There's very little natural light inside, and a few steps have to be taken in total darkness. It's worth the effort, though, for the extensive views across Calderdale, which is why Charlie was up there, with a telescope. (Photo by DM)
